Noah James Makes His Blog Debut!

Well, we have survived two nights at home! Noah seems to like to be awake at night and sleep all day...the same schedule he had in my tummy over the last 3 months...but last night he actually let us sleep for 3 and half hours in a row! He is eating like a champ and his plumbing is all working correctly (we changed 3 poopy diapers over the course of 2 hours last night!). We have got quite a system down for the whole wake up, change diapers and feeding process and it is really amazing how chipper we all are at 3 am!He really is a mellow baby and didn't even pitch a fit when he got a bath!

We are all doing well...I have had some moments full of tears, but Jason is amazing at coaching me through it and soothing both Noah and me! Jason is doing well with the lack of sleep and Noah seems as much in love with us as we are with him! The recovery from the surgery is difficult and quite painful at times, but when my little man looks me in the eyes and melts my heart all the pain seems to disappear. We are blessed to have my mom here to help out...we are able to eat and shower and do all kinds of small things that would be much more difficult if she weren't around.

We went to the Dr.s office today just for a weight check...he gained 7 oz since Sunday which puts him back at 6 lbs. 1 oz! Everyone says he looks great and we get compliments as to how well Jason and I are doing as first time parents!

All and all, we are COMPLETELY in love with our little man and couldn't ask for anything more! These are some of our favorite photos (so far)...

Noah James Long

We are still at the hospital but I just couldn't wait to share the news!

Noah James Long joined the world Friday June 20th, 2008 at 9:55 PM!
He weighed 6 lbs. 3 oz and measured 19 inches!

He came out with cry that melted my heart and was instantly soothed by the sound of his daddy's voice. Noah has passed all his tests with flying colors, is nursing like a champion and has captured the heart of each and every visitor and hospital staff! He is absolutely perfect and we are madly in love with our new baby boy!

We are both sleep deprived and still running on adrenalin, but have gotten great feedback from all the staff as to how good we are doing and that we don't have the "wow you are first time parents" look...yet! I'm sure the adrenalin will wear off soon and we will be so grateful to have Obachan staying with us for a while.

We are going to be heading home sometime tomorrow and will take some time to settle in but I will get some photos up asap! Don't be offended if we fail to answer the phone, return emails or generally seem to disappear for a while...this little man is quite captivating and demands lots of attention!

T minus 6 days

To all of you patient readers I apologize for the delay on the Tuesday Night Update! For those of you who couldn't wait and sent emails, I tried to get back to everyone, there were a lot! It was kinda nice to know that you are all reading and just as anxious as we are to meet little Noah!

So, last Tuesday I went to see Dr. Pollard. My blood pressure was still high, but ok and there was no protein in my sample! They did want to monitor the baby so they hooked me up to all the fun machines and I got to lie on the table listening to the thunder of Noah's heart beat for 10 minutes or so. He is such a silly little baby! The nurse had a hell of a time trying to find his heart beat, and once she did, HE MOVED! She found it again, hooked me up and let me be. Noah sure is active still. He was moving around all over the place, kicking monitors and then resting and then up about a minute or two later. It was fun, and almost meditative to just lie there listening to his little heart beat faster and slower, louder and quieter. Occasionally I would look up and see a tidal wave roll across my belly or the monitors bounce up and down! Everyone in the office was listening as well...the nurse returned with a smile and said that everyone wanted to know who's baby was making all that ruckus!!

Shortly after the nurse left, Dr. Pollard came in bobbing her head to the heartbeat and freed me from the straps and goo while telling me "baby looks great" and showed me all the ups and downs on the printout. She also said that after talking with me last week she expected to see Jason and I on schedule for the version Monday morning. She then quickly apologized if she scared us (which she didn't) and wrapped it up by saying that with my anterior placenta and tight uterus the likelihood of a successful version was low and made me feel even better about our decision to decline the procedure.

Now for the exciting part...we took a look at the calendar, talked with the hospital and scheduled a cesarean for next week! That's right, we are scheduled to arrive at the hospital at 10 am Wednesday June 25th, 2008 and will meet Noah by noon! Of course we had to go over all the "informed consent" and talk about all the scary stuff that could happen as well as some paperwork regarding the procedure...yuck! But we also talked about our options and discussed some of our wishes. Both Jason and my mom will be in the operating room with me! We are able to video tape and take still images of the birth (my mom will be assigned that job!) and as long as Noah is breathing ok he can be placed in Jason's arms and remain with us at all times.

I left the office in tears...a combination of being overjoyed, overwhelmed, excited, scared, the whole range of emotions! I called Jason and we took a few deep breaths as we absorbed the information that we are to become parents to a little baby boy next Wednesday at 12:00! It is kinda weird knowing when it will all happen...it is kinda cool being able to arrange time off from work, visitors and everything else, but I think this will be the longest 6 days of our life! Tuesday night we will probably lie awake all night in anticipation despite every effort to sleep!

So, there it is...Noah James Long is scheduled for delivery Wednesday June 25th, 2008 at 12 o'clock noon! That is unless he chooses to come earlier or turn his little but around (which is possible and wouldn't be surprising)!! We will be in the hospital at least 3 nights and will post pictures and details as soon as possible. In the mean time, keep thinking head down baby thoughts, it can still happen, and send all your love our way next Wednesday!!!

Our week at a glance!

Surprisingly, or not so surprising I suppose, we have managed to keep busy all week!

Sunday, Fathers Day, we went to Santa Cruz and spent the afternoon with the Long Family! We met up with Ron & Kathy, Nathan & Sierra, Damien, Chesna and Soren and went to the Zyante Fire Department's Annual Pancake Breakfast! It was packed but worth the wait...all the food was yummy! Sierra had a blast bouncing around in the jumpy house and loved the blueberry pancakes! Soren made everyone coo and smile and he was such a good baby the whole time. Damien beamed with pride as he pushed his little man around and snuggled with him. We all took turns oogling over the baby and had all kinds of fun just watching his facial expressions! It was a great Father's Day!

Monday I interviewed yet another pediatrician, saw the chiropractor and we ended the night by making a belly cast. It was hard to stand still and was kinda weird being covered in plaster but the end result is pretty neat! Eventually we will smooth it out and paint it and take some pics of Noah in it!

Tuesday was the big Dr. Day!

Wednesday, I went up to San Francisco for a surprise baby shower at Jason's work! Newton, one of Jason's coworkers, organized everything and did a great job! I got a call from him last week and it took everything I had not to say something to Jason, but I kept it all in and it was worth it to see the look on J's face! I was wondering how Newton got my number, it turned out that it was quite a task! A bunch of his coworkers were searching for my email or phone number everywhere and in the end, Mike "the intern" acted like he was super interested in Jason's new Blackberry and got my number out of there! SNEAKY, SNEAKY!! I LOVE IT!!

Anyway, I got super lucky with parking (though it cost $3 for one hour at the meter) met with Newton down in the lobby and was greeted by a dozen of Jason's coworkers as they made their way upstairs. While Jason had a faux meeting with his boss at 2:00 pm, about 20 of us snuck into a conference room where Newton had cake, soda, coffee and even games set up! It was a real party! It was neat getting to talk to and meet all the people Jason talks about and even more neat to find out that most of them knew everything that was going on with me and the baby! About 2:15 Jason came in expecting another meeting and had an ear to ear grin as we all shouted surprise! He looked at me twice before registering that it was actually me and responded with, "how did you get here!" He was sooooo surprised!

We played a game...taste and name that baby food...Jason did a good job! It was quite entertaining to watch everyone smell, taste and grimace at the 4 mystery jars of mashed nastyness...did you know that they make "macaroni and cheese" flavored baby food....soooo gross! We had some yummy cake that Jason managed to turn into a big fat mess. His coworkers really went all out. They even stuffed a diaper bag full of gifts (blankets, binkies, a baby first aid kit, bibs, wipes and a huge gift card to Target)! The cards were full of well wishes and tid bits of wisdom! Mike even went all the way out to my car to pump some more $ into the meter! It really was special and meant a lot to us. I didn't snap enough pictures but hope you enjoy the few we did get!
THANK YOU TO ALL THE PG&E'ERS!

bearing gifts for me and Noah...including a whole tub of ICE CREAM! Treyton and Vance were curious little guys andToday I got to spend some fun in the pool with the Young Family! Alica, Treyton, Vance & River all made a trip over the hill and into the heat to visit me and Noah one last time before he is born! They too came asked about nearly everything in the apartment and riled up the cats before we made our way out to the water. After 1o minutes or so of hesitation, the two boys were hootin' and hollerin' as fought over floaties and splashed around the entire pool. Alicia and I did a pretty good job maintain a conversation between River's feedings, Vances cries for help and Treyton's "watch me" moments.

While enjoying some snacks Vance and I talked about the baby in my tummy. He had fun poking my belly and was very entertained by the fact that it changed color when he poked it. Then he let me in on a little secret....he continuously told me, "hey, your tummy is FAT!" He said it with a great big smile and was so proud of his observation. It was pretty cute and each time I replied, "Yes it is, and this is probably the only time I will be ok with you saying that to me!" He would smile and nod and walk off! Too cute. All those Young boys are adorable and I can't wait for another visit!

I think tomorrow I am going take it easy! I see the chiropractor in the morning and hope to float in the pool and nap all day! Sounds like a good Friday to me! With my feet still looking like Fred Flinstone's, relaxing may just get them down to a Barney Rubble size!

Just Kidding!

Many of you have been asking and no, I did not have the baby! We did have a false alarm last Friday...yes, Friday the 13th, and were at the hospital for about 3 hours and then set free still pregnant.

In short, they thought that I may have had a leak in my bag of waters and admitted me to Labor & delivery for some tests. Jason was coming home early for the rehearsal dinner, so I picked him up from the train station and instead of going to Santa Cruz we went to the hospital. I had Jason call Justine, I couldn't do it...she had moved her wedding up a month just to make sure that Jason and I were there and here we were in the hospital the night before!

Anyway, we got there and the place was packed so we ended up in a make shift room, me on a gurney, Jason sitting in a wheel chair and all the machines wheeled in. My blood pressure was still up (147/92)and they of course were worried...HELLO who's wouldn't go up in that situation?!...but it still has yet to hit the "danger zone" and we are ok there.

Jason, like most men, was immediately drawn to all the numbers and happenings of the machines and was soon cheering Noah on to get his heart rate up to 180. It did, Noah had a blast kicking all the monitors on my tummy and we had fun watching them bounce and coincide with his increasing heart rate. We then realized that I was having contractions, nothing too big or regular, but they were registering on the machines and some were definitely uncomfortable!!

Once we met with the nurse and got to ask some questions, she said that she thought my water was leaking and if it was, we were going to have a baby by the end of the night!! WHAT!! Talk about a reality check...we are not ready for this! There were a million things running through our head...our Dr. is out of town, the wedding is tomorrow, it's friday the 13th, the laundry isn't done, our hospital bag isn't packed, all of it...WE AREN'T READY! Then we would take a few breaths and say, "well, here we go...lets meet our baby." Of course we would quickly jump back to, "No, not tonight...this isn't going to happen tonight, wait until Sunday!"

In the end...3 hours later...after we were transfered to a room, called our parents, called the bride and had been put through an emotional roller coaster, the lab tests came back negative for the amniotic fluid! The Dr. came in, did another check, performed an ultrasound to confirm the breech position and then sent us on our way. We were giving instructions to take it easy, monitor signs of preeclampsia and early labor and to call our dr. or return to the hospital if any symptoms arose. We let out a sigh of relief as well as a bit of disappointment and left the hospital in a bit of a daze. We made it to Santa Cruz for dinner with the wedding party and got a decent nights sleep before the weekend.

Hopefully next time we go to the hospital it will be the real deal and we will get to meet Noah...I see the Dr. tomorrow and we will fill you in on any details!

It's About Time!

After 8 years Matt and Justine are now Mr. & Mrs. Snow, they finally tied the knot!!! Congratulations you two! The wedding was beautiful and at some point through out the night EVERY guest shed a tear! Justine did an amazing job planning every last detail and the whole event was beautiful! The food was AMAZING (The Grapes of Wrath have yummy food), the cake was delicious, the music (hand picked by Justine) was entertaining and everyone left with a smile! I could go on and on about everything that was fantastic about the wedding, but instead I will just say that we are so happy for the newlyweds, and leave you with some photos!

37 Weeks and still breech

Yes, we do have a stubborn little baby! Everyone seems to have a funny to make when we are talking about little Noah refusing to turn upside down.

"Oh it's just your karma starting early"
"It's because he has Erwin blood"
"It's because he has Long blood"
"It is the first of MANY defiances you will experience"

The list goes on and on! What else can we do but laugh right?! I do see this as a lesson for us though....it's a lesson in letting go of our hard and strong plans and get used to the fact that most things won't go exactly as planned once we have a little baby in the mix...be it a shower, a trip to the grocery store or even a nap, Noah's plans will not always coincide with ours! Though we are still talking to him and hoping for a LATE turn, I have done a lot of processing and come to terms with the loss of the delivery we have prepped and planned for. I am sure that my process isn't over and I will probably go through some more highs and lows regarding the cesarean birth, but as of now I am in a place of acceptance. When it comes down to it, we just want Noah to get here as safe as possible and as healthy as can be...and it looks like a cesarean birth is going to be the safest plan for both Noah and myself.

With that said, after speaking with our Dr. on Tuesday we have decided not to attempt the external version. There are many risks that come along with the procedure, enough that they only attempt to manually turn him in the hospital, next to the OR with me prepped for surgery. Our risk is also increased due to my anterior placenta. It is right on the front of my belly and would be between the Dr.'s pushing and the baby's body...this increases the likely hood that during the procedure my placenta could be detached from the uterus, not a good thing!

In the event that something went wrong, the birth of Noah would turn into an "emergency cesarean" and more of a crisis situation rather than a celebration. The thought of me unconscious, Jason alone in the hallway and Noah whisked off to the nursery and us all apart for an hour is just not worth it to us. In a non-emergency situation, Jason will be by my side, I will be awake and we will be able to bond with the baby the instant he is delivered. Not to say we wont be nervous but it is a way different tone than the alternative situation. We have spent weeks going over every scenario and changing our minds on a daily basis (if not 2-3 times a day) as to what we should do! It is quite a relief to have made a decision and we are confident that it is the right one!

Next week we will discuss the cesarean with our Dr. and find out what options we have. We could possibly have our son in our arms 10 days from now! Who knows, Noah may have listened to me this whole time about being born at 38 weeks and choose to join us next week! We have told him that he just has to wait until Justine and Matt's wedding....which is TOMORROW! WOO HOO!! Maybe all the excitement of the weekend will get things going!

Lastly, I finally to a picture of my MONSTER FEET to share. I seriously can't believe how swollen they get (and the photo makes them look good)! So, 37 weeks brings us closer to meeting our son but also brings, an increase in the discomfort from carpal tunnel, heart burn and SWELLING!! ok...don't laugh....well you can laugh, we do everyday!

To wrap it all up...
Have a great weekend and DON'T FORGET TO CALL YOUR FATHERS and send wishes to all the DAD's you know!!!

Happy Anniversary...

Today is our One Year Wedding Anniversary!
This last year went by at a million miles a minute! It doesn't seem like an entire year has passed since our wedding day or our honeymoon! We have spent 5 years together and each year seems to just get better and better and this last year definitely went by the fastest. People keep telling us that it is just going to move even faster...I'm not sure it is even possible.

We celebrated last Saturday night... got all dressed up and went to dinner in Aptos at the Seascape Resort. We ate some amazing food, watched a beautiful sunset over the ocean, and enjoyed the best crème brûlée ever! We shared a bunch of laughs while reminiscing about our wedding day....it was soooo much fun! Jason's favorite memories were watching me walk down the aisle and smashing cake in my face!!! My favorites were reading our vows, going to the beach and yes...the cake was pretty memorable...I took him out!!!!

i pulled away & he started to go down!

I WIN!!!

good memory!!

(check out all the wedding photos on our picasa web album . The albums labeled with Abel Soria as the photographer are the professional ones, but our friends got some great shots too!)

Tonight we enjoyed one of our favorite home cooked meals, talked a bunch about the baby, looked through some of our wedding photos and busted out the year old cake for dessert. It wasn't horrible but it wasn't great...and it didn't end up in my nose or my eyes or my ears!!!

getting ready to taste it!

diggin in and not so impressed!!

We have had an amazing first year of marriage. It has been full of big accomplishments and big changes....we look forward to every year to come and expect each to bring even more change and more joy then the last!!

36 weeks...ALREADY?!

HOLEY MOLEY! 36 weeks! This whole pregnancy I have been telling Noah to be born at 38 weeks…it seemed sooooooooooo far out and early was fine. Now that 38 weeks is JUST 2 WEEKS AWAY, it seems too close and a bit overwhelming! I can’t believe we are here already and though I am anxious to meet our son, to hold him in my arms and kiss his little nose…2 weeks seems like not enough time to prepare! But really 4 more months probably wouldn’t be enough time either!

Everyone asks, “ARE YOU READY?” and of course we reply with a big smile “YES! YES! YES!” But when you break it down, are you ever really ready!! We have the crib, the clothes, the pack and play, the car seat, and our first diaper delivery is scheduled for June 20th , we have almost finished all our classes and are in the process of packing our hospital bag. My mom is ready to come down asap and we have a whole slew of friends and family ready to bring food and come visit! We still need to choose a pediatrician but according to all the lists and recommendations we are ready! I don’t sleep any longer than 3 hours at a time and am still functioning ok, so I am ready for the lack of sleep! I spill stuff on my clothes all the time, so I am ready to have baby junk spit on me.

Sure, I have wanted to be a mom for years and I love babies and can’t wait to have one actually call me mom rather than auntie. But no matter how many books I read, magazines I skim through and stories I hear, nothing will really prepare us and make us “ready” for what is to come in the next few weeks. I don’t think there is anything that can actually prepare you for all the emotional, psychological, and physical changes that we are to expect. In all reality, how many of you parents out there can say that you were READY when the baby actually arrived. Did the books tell you all you needed to know? Were all the feelings you got expected? Honestly?!

So, I guess my answer to, “Are you ready?” could be the typical, “Ready as I’ll ever be!” Or even more on honestly, I am ready to take on a new challenge and walk through whatever is coming my way. Jason and I are so excited to become parents and have so much love to give this little baby…together we can do anything and this new adventure we call Noah will just be the next step in our journey and we are ready to jump into it!!!

Ok, now for the last Dr. visit…we didn’t get to see the Dr., she got called out to an emergency delivery just before seeing us, but we did see the physicians assistant who was super nice and gave us as much information as she could. Our little man is still in the breech position, he seems to have found a comfy spot and is hanging out there. The PA was encouraging though saying that they can still turn at 37 weeks J His heart is still beating strong, the fluid levels are good and he is still super active (especially in the middle of the night). The books say he is about 6 lbs now and around 19 inches long and the only organ that is not absolutely mature is his lungs. By the end of this week Noah will be considered full term and if delivered should be a-ok!

On the not so fun side of things, at my last appointment my blood pressure was up, there was protein in my urine and paired with the swelling and headaches I am showing signs of hypertension/preeclampsia. They sent me immediately to the lab with a STAT order to get blood work done, which confirmed “changes.” (whatever that means, I love the vague nature of answers from a dr.!) Basically, my numbers are high, but not too high yet, and while they aren’t ordering bed rest or freaking out, they are going to “watch me closely.” Not too worried about it, but no more roller coasters and extreme sports, wouldn’t want my blood pressure to go up! HA! HA!

We see the Dr. again next Wednesday and will be hoping to see a vertex baby, but will be making decisions as to weather or not we are going to try to turn Noah and if/when we would schedule a c-section if necessary. I’ll keep you posted….

Happy Birthday Chesna!

Again, a bit late…but better late than never right! Chesna celebrated the anniversary of her 29th birthday (won’t tell you what anniversary) the same day as Jason’s graduation!!!!

With her 2 week and 4 day old baby in tow, Chesna and Damien made it over our way to celebrate with Jason and got a warm happy birthday from all of us! I’m sure she didn’t head out for a wild night on the town to celebrate, but enjoyed this birthday just that much more with her new son close by!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY CHESNA!!!!

conGRADulations Jason!

So, it is coming a few weeks late, but the recognition is due! Jason, finished his coursework at San Jose State last December and participated in the graduation ceremony on Saturday May 24th! It was huge! They held it at the Spartan Stadium and it took 45 min. to an hour just to walk all the grads out onto the field (and there were still empty seats)! The majority of the 2 hour ceremony was the faculty patting each other on the back and handing out award to each other. The introductions for each staff were longer than the speeches!

Then, they recognized the smarty smart students, which was quick! Gave acknowledgment to the PHD’s, then the Masters (who also got hooded individually at each college) and in the last 5 minutes they honored the bachelors degree students. Jason stood up in his seat for about 1 minute and sat back down and it was over! It was very anti climactic but a process that was a long time coming and we are all very proud of him!

Proud In-Laws

Proud Parents

& a Proud Wife!!!

After we managed to get off the field, back down to our cars and through the traffic mess, we had a bunch of friends and family over to the house for a celebration. Of course, the weather was uncooperative….well for me it was great, everyone else was freezing! The weekend before it was a million degrees at the shower and this weekend it was trying to rain!

Anyway, the boys got the BBQ up and running out at the pool while my mom’s (Kathy & Kathy!) helped me finish up the salads! We had so much fun visiting with everyone (including Soren who is a party monster at 3 weeks old) watching the kiddos play and celebrating Jason’s 9 year adventure through the school system! Congratulations Jason!!!!

Enjoy some more pics we snapped throughout the afternoon!

My mom decided that the best way to stay warm was to have everyone sit on her....gotta love Sierra's pose (seriously, that was her pose!)

I didn't forget about you!

Sorry it has been so long since I have posted...Our internet has been out since last Saturday (May 24th)!!! I feel like I have been disconnected from the world for the last week. Jason has a new handy dandy Blackberry, that has allowed me to periodically and briefly check my email, and Justine & Matt have shared their computers for a moment while we were over at their house, but for the most part I have been "unplugged" for the last week.

Comcast has come out twice and so far has done nothing but confirm that the internet connection is bad...NO!!? REALLY?!!! That's what we said when we called!!! Seriously! As of Friday they still had not scheduled a "maintenance team" to come out and do whatever they need to do and we are still just waiting. On top of it all, it turns out that "the box" for our set of town homes is the only one that is behind locked doors, and to access it, we need the landlord to be home. Of course, Comcast says, "we will be there between 10 am and 2 pm" ...huge time spread and, you guessed it, they are NEVER on time so they often miss the landord and have to reschedule again...LAME! Hopefully this week will be a bit more productive and we will be able to "plug in" and recharge soon.

In the meantime, I hope to write my updates offline and when Jason gets home, I will hook up the Blackberry and post for you while I skim through my email and check my calender! There has been lots going on here, including; Jason's graduation (9 years in the making), Chesna's Birthday, our 35 week ultrasound (which revealed a still breeched Noah), and Treyton's Spy Party! I will posts pictures and details over the next few days :)

In the mean time, think thoughts of a competent cable guy and a head down baby! :)
