If the party was at your own house though...you suddenly had a whole slew of hidden talents, interesting outfits, super neat toys, and a million stories to share with the new guests. You still had to interrupt the incessant talking that the adults did at any party, but it was a lot easier to be heard. You had no problem launching yourself off the sofa and into the middle of the room at home! At your own house, in contrast to the other houses, the party was never long enough and it was an all too sad moment when you had to wave goodbye to your new "best friends."
About 4 years ago, my first year at UCSC, I realized that I was one of those adults. Jason and I went to an official dinner party with about 6 other people whom I went to school with. We were all embarking on this university adventure, were half way through our first quarter and had sooooo much to talk about. There were 4 sociology majors, a history major, a poli sci and a computer science major! After about 4 hours, 4 or 5 bottles of wine and an organic vegetarian meal, we had solved the worlds problems and were slurring our arguments as we said our good byes! Jason and I laughed the next day when we realized that we had spent an entire evening around the dining room table talking about politics, current events and social problems...and ENJOYED IT!
What spurred this little rant though was not another politically charged dinner conversation, but a fun filled afternoon with another mom and her 3 sons! Again, I was on the adult side TALKING and encouraging the kids to go out and play somewhere else! Since I have been pregnant I have been networking with other preggos and mom's all over the place and pleasantly surprised at how easy it has been to connect with them. It has been like internet dating...ha ha...but I am testing out mom's and kids rather than men! LOL!
Anyway, last Friday, I ventured over to Santa Cruz to meet up with a
woman who I went to high school with. We connected via myspace in January when I recognized her photo on a friends page, saw that she was pregnant and had two other boys! I knew her mother very well, and it was an in to start a conversation! It was great to talk with someone who had already been through 2 pregnancies and was open to sharing her experiences with me and my pondering mind! Anyway, Alicia had her third son, River, in February and we finally got to meet up, have a face to face conversation and take in the Santa Cruz sun!
Her middle son Vance (3 1/2 and absolutely adorable) was the typical little kid at a lunch party! He was all over the place, had stories to tell, talents to show and the biggest smile ever! I waited at the house while they went to pick up Trayton from school (he is 6 almost 7 and just as adorable as Vance) Apparently, the whole way home, Vance told his brother that his new friend Krystal was at the house! :) Once the two of them were home, they pulled out all the tricks. After convincing me to share some candy, dripping his popsicle all over the living room and digging through my purse, Vance ended up in his Super Man p-j's and flying through the living room! Shortly after, Treyton too was slipping and sliding around the house in his p-j's....at 3:00 in the afternoon! We herded them back outside which prompted yet another wardrobe change and a whole new series of "watch this" and "look what I can do!"I was having so much fun watching them and REALLY enjoying the conversation with Alicia,
despite the interruptions every few minutes, that I too was sad that I had to go. Vance tried to convince me to come back right after my chiropractor appointment but he settled for another visit next week, gave me a big hug and his sadness was overcome by the idea of a big glass of lemonade!I would call it a successful date, and look forward to another visit with the Young Family! (I forgot to snap some photos...so I stole some from Alicia's page!)
